A1-The Great North Road

The line of Roman wall in the museum grounds. |
Aldborough is a particularly pretty village, within walking distance of Boroughbridge and very much on the Roman road from York to the North. The village is entirely within the boundary of the once very substantial Roman town of Isurium. A great many Roman things have been found, a lot of them in the 19th century when archaeology wasn't quite what it is now. Nevertheless, a good many finds are displayed in the museum, a small but excellent institution well worth a visit and set in a bit of a park with bits of Roman walls and a couple of big mosaics. Well worth a visit. |
| This cylindrical milestone was found at Dual Cross on the
Isurium-Cataractonium road in 1776. It is kept at the Aldborough museum.
Its inscription, referring to Decius who reigned from 249 to 251, reads:
IMP CAES G MESSIVS Q DECI TRAI FELICI AVG XX C S

The Star Mosaic, also in the museum grounds is one of the best preserved such floors in Britain. Nearby is another floor known as the Lion Mosaic but the picture of a lion has gone missing.
