Roman Roads in Lincolnshire

Map by Michael Honeybone.

In pre-historic and Roman times, the trackways had by-passed the site of Grantham.  The Salt Way passed two miles to the south. Sewstern Lane, connecting Stamford with the Fosse-Way near Newark, passed five miles to the west.  At least three Roman roads had their line to the east of Grantham; Ermine Street, King Street and Mareham Lane, all leading northwards from the Peterborough region.  A further route from Stamford to Lincoln passed through Bitchfield, just north of Corby Glen, in medieval times. The Gough map of about 1360 shows that a north road passed through Grantham.
