Penge

and such like parts of south London

BE KIND AND MERCIFUL TO ALL ANIMALS

Penge's New Square

"A new public square, developed by Philip Cave & Associates, was opened by the Mayor of Bromley on July 14th 2001. This triangular area for many years contained public toilets, a horse trough, and bus shelter, as some 227 busses terminated there. This was demolished and replaced by a pergola in the 1980s. The new square is the last of three financed by the Single Regeneration Budget. The canopy of the clock tower was inspired by the wings of the pterodactyl model in Crystal Palace Park." from a Google cached page

So where did the horse trough go?...seems it was removed several years ago.

"Also spotted another one this morning.  Geographers Master Atlas of Gtr Ldn,
1983, p 119, Square 58Q.   Birchanger Rd and Howard Rd meet Woodside Green
in a sharp Vee.  In the crutch of this Vee stands the trough, parallel to
Woodside Green, from where the usual inscription may be read." Peter Abbott.
Well that's near Penge.

"Found another horsetrough this morning, this time filled with small
white-blossoming flowers.  Might've bin allysium, if it's not to early in
the season for them.  It was in the crutch of another pair of roads,
Moreland Road and Moreland Avenue, not 1/2 ml from the previous, but nearer
E Croydon Sta.  This time with its longitudinal axis bisecting the vee."  Peter Abbott.

"While researching Penge I've come across a recent publication of old picture
postcards.  Two of these PPCs show a double-length horse trough, requiring
six granite legs rather than the usual four.  It's sited @ the southern end
of Crystal Palace Parade, on the park side, close to the roundabout and
opposite the White Swan pub." Peter Abbott.

There's a trough I've been passing abt half a dozen times a week for the
best part of a year without noticing it.  That's because it's @ the corner
of a complex yet high-speed road junction where I'm always focusing on the
traffic too intently.
It faces NE, sited some 5 m NE of the most NE-erly corner of 'The Waddon,' a
pub just opposite Waddon Station, on the acute-angled corner where Stafford
Road meets Epsom Road near central Croydon.
Today it was sporting purple and golden primroses. Peter Abbott.

I spotted no less than two troughs in Wimbledon.

The first was on the W side of the road Parkside, a few yards north of its
junction with Cannizaro Road.  It's an especially grand affair as just
behind it was what seemed a human drinking fountain contained in an
elaborately carved stone gazebo.

The second was within the town of Wimbledon, on the north side of the High
Street, either @ the junc with Church Rd or @ its Wimbledon Hill Road end, I
write this the next morning and can't quite remember.

The night was too dark, raining and blustery to be able to report on the
floral arrangements if any, but no doubt the English Heritage website'll
enlighten on such important details in due course. Peter Abbott.

Spied another horse trough yesterday.  In the midst of Brockwell Park, Herne
Hill, SE24, Ldn.  Unusally it was @ least 50 yd from the nearest road, the A
216 Norwood Road, but on a footpath, abt some 100 yd N of the park's SE
corner. P.A.

Another trough was spotted cantering down Epsom High Street, just
past the clock tower.  Full of budding shrubs, no less.

Here comes another trough; this one in Hyde Park; say 100 m north of the
Serpentine, 30 m of the West Carriage Drive, say 120 m NE of the Serpentine
Bridge.
