METROPOLITAN DRINKING FOUNTAIN & CATTLE TROUGH ASSOCIATION AD 1869 |
Margery Polley, a widow from Pembury, near Tunbridge Wells, with Protestant convictions, was tried for heresy before the Bishop of Rochester and condemned to be burnt in 1555, during the reign of Queen Mary. A memorial horse trough was placed on the Green in Pembury, by the Metropolitan Drinking fountain and Cattle Trough Association in 1869.

George Wise was a woodworker, one of the skilled craftsmen responsible for styles of marquetry known as Tunbridge ware.

David Lionel Salomons, (1851-1925), a scientist and engineer. A year after presenting this horse trough, in 1895, he organised the first "Horseless Carriage Exhibition" in Tunbridge Wells. This was England's first motor show. How appropriate that his memorial should be a horse trough. |

The bulk of his estate was spent establishing horse troughs worldwide, with, it is said, 70 000 in Australia. In England the funds were administered by the Metropolitan Cattletrough and Drinking Fountain Association . |
